Maureen excelled at sports and was a fan of rough, competitive game. This interest was combined with the natural ability to perform. As evidenced by being the recipient of nearly every Feis awards for drama and the stage that her country had to offer. She was accepted at the Abbey Theater by age 14 which was where she explored her love of classical and opera. Charles Laughton was mesmerized after seeing the Maureen screen examination. He was captivated by the stunning eyes of Maureen. Laughton together with his co-star Erich Pommer changed Maureen FitzSimons's title to "Maureen O'Hara", a slightly shorter name that was used on the marquee. Then, they cast for her role as an actress in Jamaica Inn, (1939). Maureen was under contract with Laughton to film her next movie in America at RKO Pictures (The Hunchback of Notre Notre Dame 1939). The film's epic nature had a huge success, and the contract of Maureen was bought from Laughton by RKO. Maureen was only 19 when she made her debut with Laughton in two films.
